Experiential Christmas Advent Calendar

I often wonder what childhood stories my children will tell when they are older.

What fun things have we done to reminisce about? What events have we experienced together that enriches their childhood and our ‘familyness’. What photos will we have to experience those moments again?

This Christmas, I want our lives to be filled with joyful loving moments.

Moments where we are happy together, where we experience the joy of each other’s company, and moments where we are having fun doing things we don’t normally do.

Actually, let’s make all our Christmases like that.

And so, I’m starting a new tradition – an experiential Christmas advent calendar.

advent calendar kid activities

I had to think really hard to come up with 24 fun activities. I incorporated some events around town that we’ll visit together and activities from my fellow mommy bloggers. I then printed these activities (free printables below), cut them up and put them in the advent calendar, strategically placing the activities to particular dates.

Each morning, we’ll open a little door to an activity we’ll be experiencing together as a family. I am also making a point to photograph us in these experiences (with my good camera, not just the iPhone…) so Elle will have photos to remember our fun times together.

I can just picture my Little Girl opening the tiny door to reveal a piece of magic waiting inside.

Here are some things I can’t wait to experience with her:

  • Hunting for Christmas chocolates around the house.
  • Having a hot chocolate party with all the fixings! Marshmallows, whipped cream, chocolate sprinkles, candy cane, chocolate chips, cinnamon sticks, Kahlua (for the adults, obviously)…anything that goes into a hot chocolate will be there.
  • Riding on the Christmas Carousel with Elle and trying the famous German Christmas Drink (I have no idea what this is!) at the Vancouver Christmas Market.

I can’t wait to show her photos of her 3rd Christmas and tell her how she made the biggest hot chocolate mustache or how royal she looked as the queen when we had high tea that Christmas 10 years ago.

This will be a magical Christmas to remember.

I know how hard it is to come up with 24 different activities for Christmas (trust me, it took me 2 days!) Lucky you, I came up with 30! You could download it here.

oh this sounds like so much fun! I can’t wait to hear more about your christmas adventures.
And I’m getting excited just thinking about doing these things with my little guy in a few years (some we can do now.. but a lot he will enjoy more when he’s a bit older!). I can’t wait to start this tradition!!

Your printables are absoutely gorgeous! We’ve done an experiential advent calendar the last couple years and this year we’re doing one that’s a different craft each day. I’ll let you know how it goes. 🙂

This is a great idea! Where do I get that cute little tree with doors, my daughter will love it if we do this, I might just try to pull of the 24 days starting this Saturday, picture and crafts with Santa and Ms Clause, I am really excited to spend this time with my kids. I certainly enjoy being a mom 🙂

That’s great Justine! I really don’t think Elle would remember many of these activities either which is why it’s so important to have photos so we could tell them about it.

Oooo, a Crafty Advent Calendar! What a great idea!

Karina, I got the tree from Superstore for $19. I know Ikea has an advent calendar too and theirs use slide out boxes instead of doors. Have fun with the activities! Let me know how it goes =)

I still can’t get the email to work. I haven’t received anything. Not a big deal. I can create the cards myself. Thanks for posting them though. Wish I could buy that adorable advent tree though. I don’t think we have one of those stores around here. 🙁

Hi Jaime! Sorry about the email. I wonder if it got caught in your spam filter. I could send you the pdf if I have your email address. Would that work for you?
