playing outside makes everyone happy

One of the things I love most is spending time outside with my family, especially in our backyard.

It is a place where I’m present.

There, my children and I pick berries off its vines, have picnics on a white blanket, play games we made up and roll around laughing like no body’s business.

It’s my happy place.

This week to be a better mother, my challenge is to spend time outside every day.

Easy.

I find that when we spend time outside, I’m a better parent. I’m more patient, happier and I seem to handle stressful situations better. I also noticed Elle is a better kid when she plays outside.

Then I read this from Prenatal to Parenting:

parenting advice, parenting quote

That explains a lot!

I also think one of the reason why playing outside is such a positive experience for us is because my very active 3 year old has a bigger space to channel her energy.

When we’re in the house, she’s zipping here and there, dragging toys around the house, circling around me or my son…her big energy is contained in a little space. When we’re outside, she has a bigger place to roam and I’m not so concerned if she makes a mess (which is why we LOVE to picnic outside).

Since I’m challenged to spend time outside everyday, today I took a 50 minutes break during the middle of my work day and spent it with my family playing outside.

This decision worked out really well as we just got our Kiwi Crate in the mail and this month’s theme is Fun With Flight, which included a kite making kit. We decided to take the box outside and build the kites in the backyard.

I always strive for simplicity in my life and being with my family doing crafts in our backyard is it. The kite building process was a space for us to connect and bond, and for me to take a break from the busyness of the on-line world, and be physically and mentally present.

After our kites are built, my husband took a nap on the grass while my son played by himself beside him. Elle and I took our kites and ran around the yard trying to keep it up in the air. It was a great way to get some exercise!Kiwi crate fun with flight - kite

The outdoors is very important to us as well. We enjoy playing outside and eating outside and hanging out in our big backyard. As we look for new homes we are finding this increasingly a difficult thing to find. Yard space is such an extension of your home and so important to family life.
