Cherry Kool Aid Play Dough

One of the activities on our Summer Bucket List is to make homemade play dough.

Making play dough is one of those activities for kids that is super easy and super simple to do. Most of the ingredients in the recipe are ones you already have in your home. From start to finish, it took a whole 10 minutes. Thats including doing the dishes!

The little girl is going through a pink/red phase so everything needs to be one of those colours. We used Cherry Kool Aid to make our dough red. I don’t know what’s in this stuff aside from sugar and food colouring but it smells heavenly and it makes it that much more fun!make homemade play dough

After some mixing and kneading, the mixture came together and formed the softest, most fragrant pliable dough.

This homemade playdough recipe is actually edible which is great for kids since they’ll gobble up anything that smells good but I wouldn’t recommend eating it…we tried and spat it back out right away. It doesn’t taste how it smells.

With some cookie cutters and existing toys, this super easy kids activity kept the little girl busy for more than 2 hours over the next few days.

The ingredients for this homemade dough cost less than $1.50 to make so this activity cost $0.75 an hour. Definitely got a good ROI here =)

Recipe For Homemade Kool Aid Playdough

  • 1 1/4 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup salt
  • 1 pkg Kool Aid (any flavour/colour of your choice – we used cherry)
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 1/2 tbsp vegetable oil

  1. In a bowl, mix together flour, salt and kool aid
  2. Stir in boiling water and oil (be careful with the boiling water)
  3. Mix the liquids with the flour mixture. The mixture will be hot!
  4. Knead with hands for about 2 minutes, until all the flour has been mixed into the dough
  5. Have fun!

This playdough recipe will keep for 2-4 months in a ziploc bag or airtight container. In our house, it lasted 3 days.

Awee looks like your little girl had fun. I wish my little sister was young enough to be interested in Play Dough still. At 13 apparently it’s not cool anymore lol I still love playing with it though 🙂

Mmmmm Cherry Playdough… I can smell it now. Fabulous project. I love making homemade playdough but I don’t end up doing it very often. This may have inspired me to whip up a batch before the end of the summer. 🙂

Great project, I remember so many times making playdough for my daughter when she was younger, fun and frugal to boot.

Sounds like a really fun idea, I think my son would have lots of fun, not only playing with it but making the dough as well! Pinned!
